Professional Graduate Diploma Level 6

The Professional Graduate Diploma in IT (incorporating PGD project) qualification is the academic equivalent to a UK university honours degree. By beginning the Professional Graduate Diploma level course, you should have knowledge of the Certificate in IT and appropriate Diploma level modules.

  • Module 4: Web Engineering

Course description
Module 1: Software Engineering 2
The aim of this unit is to gain knowledge of: 

  1. The principles of software engineering 
  2. Software process models and process improvement 
  3. Development methods 
  4. Requirements and specification 
  5. Software design 
  6. Software implementation 
  7. Verification and validation 
  8. Software project management 
  9. Software quality                

The following topics are covered: Principles of software engineering; Process models; Development methods and techniques; Software development lifecycle; Project Management; Software quality.

Module 2: Distributed and Parallel Systems
The aim of this unit is to:

  1. To understand the strengths and requirements of distributed and parallel systems. 
  2. To develop an ability to develop and implement appropriate algorithms. 

The following topics are covered: Architectures; Programming models; Performance.

Module 3: Computer Services Management
The aim of this unit is to use the knowledge that the candidate has demonstrated at Certificate level to explore in depth how these competencies can be used pro-actively to deliver excellent service to customers.

The following topics are covered: Service concept; Organisations; Business processes; Customer Liaison; Availability management; Capacity planning; Support processes; Planning, costing and charging; Contract and Procurement; Legal and professional issues.

 

Module 4: Web Engineering
The aim of this unit is to:

  1. To develop a technical overview of the Web & emerging platforms. 
  2. To appreciate the mechanisms by which web content can be enriched to take account of contextual factors.
  3. To identify, evaluate and apply appropriate technologies for Web development.

The following topics are covered: Strategies for web development; Programming for the web; XML and CSS; Security and privacy section 4; Quality; Social and ethical issues; Emerging technologies and platforms.

How the course is assessed
The course is assessed through 3 hour written examinations on each of the four modules. Please be aware that practical experience is required to answer some parts of the examination. Completion of the Professional Project is also required at this level.

Completion of the Professional Graduate Diploma examination level means you are eligible to apply for BCS Membership (MBCS) if you have 2 years’ experience as an IT professional.

Professional Project
In order to finish the Professional Graduate Diploma in IT level candidates must complete a project (minimum study time of 300 hours).The submission of a project proposal is now mandatory.
Successful completion of the project and examination enables you to apply for selected postgraduate courses with UK universities and means you are eligible to apply for BCS membership (MBCS).

Length of course
A minimum of 250 hours study per module is required plus 300 hours for professional project.
