Tier 4 points based system
The Tier 4 system is a points based system which means that you must get 40 points in total to be granted an entry clearance visa to study in the UK as an adult student. You are granted 30 points for a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for studies (CAS number) and 10 points for maintenance.
English Language requirements
To apply as a Tier 4 student you must prove that you have a good level of the English language. The following link shows the English language tests approved by UKBA. Any tests not listed in the UKBA approved English Language tests, cannot be accepted as proof of your English language proficiency

Funds for studying and living in the UK
Maintenance is the amount of money you need to show that you have which will cover your course fees and your living costs whilst you are studying for your course in the UK. You must show that you have held the required money for a consecutive 28-day period (finishing on the date of the closing balance) ending no more than one month before your application. You can show the following documents to prove that you have money to pay for your course and living costs:
- personal bank or building society statements, covering a consecutive 28-day period ending no more than one month before the date of your application;
- a building society pass book, covering a consecutive 28-day period ending no more than one month before the date of your application;
- a letter from a bank confirming that funds have been held for a consecutive 28-day period ending no more than one month before the date of your application;
- a letter from a financial institution confirming that funds have been held for a consecutive 28-day period ending no more than one month before the date of your application;
- a letter from a financial institution confirming a loan, dated no more than six months before the date of your application.
If the money that you are going to use to pay your course fees and your living costs are held by your parents(s) or legal guardian, you must show that you are related to your parent(s) or legal guardian. You can do this by providing:
- your birth certificate showing the names of your parent(s); or
- your certificate of adoption showing names of both parent(s) or legal guardian; or a court document naming your legal guardian.
You must provide the original legal document or a notarised copy.
- You must also show that your parent(s) or legal guardian have given their permission for you to use this money. To do this, you must provide a letter from your parent(s) or legal guardian confirming, your relationship with your parent(s) or legal guardian; and their permission for you to use their funds to study in the UK
Living costs are calculated as :
£800 per month
if you are spending more than half of your study time in inner London; or
£600 per month
if you are spending more than half of your study time outside inner London.
